AV Competition Background Screen and Competition menu programme

To create a suitable background screen   ........
Go to
control panel / user accounts/   create a new user account  .......
called it "xyz-av-comp"
put a dot on account administrator .....
create account  .......
log off  switch user  & go to xyz-av comp  account. ...
Then  open Photoshop and create a background image for this account
An example is shown below ....... this is 1024px  by 768px  )
Then when your version  is saved where you can find it  ..........
Go to ...
control panel /display /desktop
change your background image in the background panel  (browse for your new wcpf-av-comp image)
This will give you the background  image on your computer screen for the AV competition  day
But to run the sequences you need to create a "PTE one page menu sequence"  with either the titles of the entries shown or their entry numbers.
(I have created a pte menu page image example for you below ..........
Here I have just done  5 buttons on the background with numbers   .........you can create your own image in Photoshop with the required number of  buttons or titles.
Again for the sequence the iamge would be 1024 pixels by 768 pixels or whatever screen size you wish to use.
In PTE create your menu page sequence, after you have imported  your  image   e.g   wcpf-av-pte-menu.jpg  and you then  go to object editor  and  use    the  fourth button (picture)  to import  the invisible button  gif
This is created in Photoshop earlier ..... just select size of your button and save as an invisible gif the right size.  (see  more detailed notes on invisible buttons below)
Place the first  invisible button over blue button  1  and then click properties  (click transparent background)  and go to action  / run application or open file   and in the box below enter the program name to be opened
Repeat these steps for each button so each button will have an invisible button over it to open the  different sequences in the competition.
You could if you wish have typed the sequence  names onto your  Photoshop wcpf-av-pte-background.jpg
and make your invisible button into a long narrow rectangular shape to cover the name.
NOTE  when  you hit preview in PTE these buttons will only work if you click to run a saved exe file.
Also  your
pte  wcpf-av-menu.exe should be in the same folder as all the sequences it is going to open  (so when you type in the program name in the enter box  e.g.  "  my new sequence"   rather than the long string  of the address on your computer.)
When you create the PTE menu  ........
project options select..........
main /  show settings    when show ends keep last slide in show on screen
advanced/   always show mouse cursor  and also  mouse buttons   - none on both buttons  (this means if you miss the invisible buttons you won't close  the show ......... the mouse button will only have an effect on the invisible buttons)
screen /  fit to screen  (so it fills the screen)
effects / fade in

When your new menu sequence is finished and saved as an exe file.
Place a shortcut to that menu.exe file on the desktop  of your  new  wcpf-av-comp  user
and also put up another shortcut to the folder which houses all your av competition sequences and the menu exe   .........

Then if one button in your menu  sequence refuses to open a sequence during the competition you quickly go to the desktop shortcut to the folder  and click on the sequence from there,
When that sequence finishes go back to desktop and click on  menu shortcut.
Having same background image for your desktop image and your  av competition menu means the audience are hardly aware there has been a hiccup !

Invisible Buttons
First decide what size you want the invisible button to be .
For example  I have several I created - square, rectangular and other shapes.
They are saved as invisible-.gifs with the size in the title eg 40x40.gif     to remind me of their size in pixels.

In Photoshop  .... Go to file / new
Preset =   Custom
Type in the pixel dimensions you would like
e.g  a rectangular one   40pixels wide  by 100 pixels  long  (to cover  text)
or   40 pixels by 40 pixels to cover  a small square button .

Lets start with:
  width 40 pixels
height 40 pixels

Resolution  - can be any number, as we are going to use  this for a projected image NOT a print. You may notice that whatever resolution you decide to put in, if you want to bother, the file size remains the same, as we have set our image size in pixel dimensions.

Background contents :  Transparent
name it  - invisible40x40  or something similar.
You will then have a square small shape in Photoshop which has a checkerboard background (as it is transparent)
Go to file / save for web
select  gif  not jpeg (right hand side  5th down)
make sure transparency is ticked
save  -any name so that you can quickly recognise its size invisible40x40.gif
Make sure it is saved in a folder where you can keep your invisible buttons collection.
Then just copy the ones you need for your new menu page into that particular PTE  sequence folder with the image.

When you open your  new  pte menu sequence
Import your pte menu background image (your only image)
Go to  object editor  and click the fourth "picture" button (top left)
Find your new invisible button (which you have already copied next to the pte menu image and click open.
It will appear as a pale blue semi-transparent image,  which you can then move over the spot/text/ background where you will wish to  use it as an "invisible" button. When it is in position, click properties and give this new  "invisible" button  its directions....

i.e.  action on mouse click  "run application or open file
and then  the name of the program or folder you want it to open

If you have created your new pte menu sequence

and did not  have project options / advanced
mouse buttons  left & right  set to "none"   .
.then if you inadvertently click off your invisible button when you're running your new pte menu program, that the mouse click on the background will revert to the default setting,
which is often set to "exit".
You will suddenly find your new pte menu sequence has closed
(hence my advice to have a shortcut of it on your desktop so you can very quickly reopen it if necessary.)

How do you know where to click  on the background to open the  new sequence?  ......
You will notice that the  cursor changes from  an arrow to a hand when it is over the "invisible"  button.

October 2005 .

I have created some invisible buttons which you are free to download from below:
100 pixels by 25 pixels
Right click save as - if you cannot see these buttons, draw the cursor across and they should show up in blue to give you an idea of the button size.
