A simple black border around an image in Photoshop
Create a new layer in PS.
Make the foreground colour black (D key).
Use Crtl+A to select the layer edges.
Go to Edit/Stroke and select enough pixels to your liking -
3 pixels makes a rather narrow border - depends on your
image size. Select 'inside' from radio button and hit OK and you have the border.

A simpler method - Image, Canvas Size,
tick the "relative box" and then insert the size of the border wanted .
You can choose actual width
( like 5mm if you are making a big print, or 5pixels or whatever ).
Down at the bottom you get to choose colour - as black, white , grey or other ,
and if you choose other,
you can use the colour picker to select from an area of your picture that you want to match . .
Or yet another simple method .......-
Select All
Edit - Stroke/Inside
Now you can set width in pixels and use the colour picker to adjust the colour.
Keep borders on a separate layer.
If you wish to change the image this is much simpler
Use the canvas method to enlarge the border layer
